Perfect Songs To Get Over it!

It’s dreadfully difficult to put our most personal feelings into words, especially when those feelings are that of heartache. Luckily, music is a universal language and there are plenty of talented artists and lyricists to do it for us. Because (if you didn’t know) it’s 2015, there is probably literally a song for every emotion. I have compiled a list of 8 songs that perfectly capture my emotions during the “Recovery Phase”. Not only do these songs have lyrics that speak to the wounded spirit, but their peppy tempos and catchy melodies are guaranteed to get you pumped about moving on.

1. “Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)” by Robert Plant & Allison Krauss

The perfect speed-off-into-the-sunset-with-the-windows-rolled-down song. Put on your shades, take down your hair (if applicable), and put the top down (also if applicable – we can’t all drive pink Corvette convertibles, Barbie). Alternatively, play this in the scene of your autobiographical movie in which you triumphantly strut your stuff in front of the person who hurt your twisted little heart.

Notable lyrics: Some sunny day, baby, when everything seems okay, baby, you’ll wake up and find that you’re alone ‘cause I’ll be gone.

2. “DONE.” By The Band Perry

When you’ve finally decided it’s best clear a toxic presence from your life, this is your jam. No one delivers lighthearted spite quite like Kimberly Perry.

Notable lyrics: You’ve been wearing that crown and tearing me down, it’s been awhile since you treated me right. You strung me along for far too long ‘cause I never gave up the fight until now.

3. “Tonight I’m Getting Over You” by Carly Rae Jepsen

Pump this through your headphones or speakers as you dance around your house in your underwear, or better yet, on your way to dance the night away with your best friends. Get those endorphins flowing, child.

Notable lyrics: We’re not lovers, but more than friends. Put a flame to every single word you ever said. No more cryin’ to get me through. I’ll keep dancing ‘til the morning with somebody new.

4. “Nodding Off” by Wavves ft. Best Coast

t’s funny, I originally had Chris Brown’s “Deuces” in this spot, but then I decided that this song was obviously much better. This surf rock group’s music has the unfailing ability to take a sad song and make it better, as it were. Also, Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast is definitely among my Top 10 Girl Crushes.

Notable lyrics: Don’t call me friend; I’m not your friend. Don’t call me nothin’ at all. I stopped waiting for your call.

5. “Little Black Dress” by Sara Bareilles

This is one of many personally applicable songs on Sara’s album, The Blessed Unrest. Actually stop what you’re doing right now and purchase the entire thing. You can finish reading this afterwards. Hello?! Go.

Notable lyrics: You came, lifted me up, but then you dropped a hurricane. Now I’m fighting to find the ground again. To steady my feet, get up off my knees, and just remember that I am more than just somebody’s puppet. I can find the cord and then I’ll cut it.

6. “How To Hide Your Feelings” by Man Overboard

Please succumb to the not-even-guilty pleasure that is pop punk. Air guitar and drum performances are not required, but are highly recommended.

Notable lyrics: I am leaving unexpectedly before I got to show you how months go by and I only feel worse. Try to forget the ones who forgot you first. And you don’t need him and she don’t need you. Gotta stop hanging around because the waiting hurts.

7. “Ready To Start” by Arcade Fire

I was having a particularly rough patch in the romance department a few months ago, and while spilling my guts and receiving advice from a good friend in the middle of a busy casino, this song came on over the speakers. It was as if the indie gods were answering all the burning (hah, because Arcade Fire) questions in my heart. Watch the video for extra good feels.

Notable lyrics: And I guess I’ll just begin again. You say, “Can we still be friends?” If I was scared, I would. If I was bored, you know I would. And if I was yours, but I’m not.

8. “Your Biggest Mistake” by Ellie Goulding

I suggest you take a brisk walk with this song as your soundtrack. Warning: your mood may improve dramatically.

Notable lyrics: It’s a shame you don’t know what you’re running from. Would your bones have to break and your lights turn off? Would it take the end of time to hear your heart’s false start? …And of all the things you never explained, you know this is your biggest mistake.

Late 2000’s Jams For Your Sunday Afternoon!

Don’t look now, but the late naughties are slowly creepin’ up the nostalgia line. We’re beginning to see what songs are going to stand the test of time, securing that oh-so coveted “throwback status.” And as all are still familiar enough to get everyone going, here are a few that will help you make this Sunday one you’ll not soon forget:

Akon - I'm So Paid

Life was good right before the recession.

Keri Hilson Feat. Kanye West - Knock You Down

Keri Hilson was a late-naughts staple. Seems to have faded from the spotlight, but here’s one of her finest. And she brought friends.

Cobra Starship Feat. Leighton Meester

Blair Waldorf’s first big foray into singing. The precursor to party rock?

 Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend

Man is this song great.

 My Chemical Romance - Teenagers

One to up the tempo. One to get it all out there.

 James Blunt - You're Beautiful

A perfect “entire bar drunkenly singing along to” song. Movie directors need to get on this.

Will Young - Leave Right Now

ALL OF THE FEELS

Paris Hilton - Stars Are Blind

I don’t think anyone really considers this a good song. But MANY consider it a great one.

 Mika - Grace Kelly

I don’t think I’m the only person who spent the first few months thinking MIKA was a girl. Incredible, incredible range.

Miley Cyrus - See You Again

We’ve come a long way. I wonder if best friend Leslie still keeps in touch.

Enrique Iglesias - Do You Know - The Ping Pong Song

Back before Enrique started singing about infidelity and rampant sexual exploits, he was crushed by a breakup. The ping pong song, a classic.

 Lonley Island - I'm On A Boat

A nice tie in to the first song. The famous video is a parody of Akon’s. Get paid.

Songs To Lift Your Wednesday!

I had heard people talk about 'hump day' and actually thought it was a naughty day! haha What I didn't realise is that it is usually supplemented by phrases like “the turning point,” and “the first glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel.”
Wednesday has therefore developed a nice little narrative that makes “you’re kinda/sorta almost there!” So if you're a at work, or struggling this week I have put together a little playlist for you. Turn it up loud and power through with these bits of musical joy:

Jon Bellion – Ungrateful Eyes

I first heard of this guy when he did a cover of a Drake song, and this is just as awesome.

Mighty Mike – Land Down Under Vs. Midnight City

Perfect mashup is perfect

Foxes – Youth

If you haven't gotton into foxes yet, then you need to.

Eric Prydz – Call On Me

If you’re stuck at work late, it’s never a terrible idea to have a dance party in them headphones.

Madison Beer – Melodies

Cheesylicious.

MGMT – Cool Song No. 2

Really cool track.

Sum 41 – In Too Deep

This always takes me back to my sixth form days.

Cartel - Wonder Wall Cover

Great original but I prefer this cover.

Chiddy Bang – Opposite of Adults

Dylan Owen – The Window Seat

Give it a try, seriously.

Chumbawamba – Tubthumper

This NEVER fails to get me going!
