DIY Essential Oil Blend to Relieve Stress and Anxiety

Depending on the situation, it usually starts at the centre of my neck. Muscles tighten, my shoulders hunch up towards my ears… my jaw begins to clench and pop. Teeth grinding, stomach churning, palms sweating. Stress and anxiety present themselves differently in each and every one of us, but I’m willing to bet you’ve experienced these symptoms — or something like them — at some point yourself. We’re a society of chronic stress, an awful fact, and what makes it even worse is that many of us don’t even realize that we’re affected by it. We go about our lives, accepting that twisted jaw and knotted stomach as an inevitability, something to live with, but slowly, that secret — or not-so-secret — stress might just be killing us.

Your body is trained to react to stress in many of the same ways it reacts to a perceived threat. Theoretically, a mountain of bills (or hey, our taxes) may seem far less scary than running from a wild animal, but our bodies don’t see the difference. While we may not be constantly under attack by outside forces, dealing with your day to day life can be enough to make your body feel as though it’s fighting a battle. While vastly different, each stressful situation, whether life-threatening or simply inconvenient, triggers a fight or flight response, releasing adrenaline and cortisol into the bloodstream. Adrenaline increases blood pressure and boosts your energy supplies, while cortisol releases a surge of glucose into the bloodstream, curbing certain functions that wouldn’t be productive in a dangerous situation and even altering your immune system. Yes, all that can happen from just looking at a packed calendar and feeling stressed out, or thinking about an upcoming test. If you’re chronically stressed, this means your body is reacting this way all the time, which can translate to some serious health risks, including:
  • Insomnia
  • High blood-pressure
  • Weight gain
  • Depression
  • Increased anxiety
  • Hormonal imbalances
Scary stuff indeed. Which is why we need to work towards eliminating — or at least decreasing — our stress, whether chronic or not. What is causing you anxiety? What’s stressing you out? How can you work towards eliminating those situations in your life, or at least work towards lessening their effects.

While chronic stress and anxiety should be assessed by a professional, something that always helps me decompress and de-stress is scent. Scent is an extremely powerful thing. It can conjure memories both good and bad, excite us, soothe us, even encourage us to sleep. Today I’m sharing an essential oil blend that should ease a troubled mind and put nerves to rest.

Materials:

Dark glass roll-on vial or dropper bottle (dark glass protects against sunlight)
20 drops patchouli essential oil
30 drops cedar wood essential oil
25 drops lavender essential oil
30 drops ylang ylang essential oil
20 drops bergamot essential oil
Jojoba oil (optional)

Combine all the oils in the glass vial. Depending on the size of the bottle, the liquid won’t likely fill it. You can leave as-is or dilute with the jojoba oil to create a moisturising oil for hands and body.

Uses (undiluted):

Rub a few drops between your palms and breathe in the scent deeply for an instant calming effect in stressful or anxious situations.

Add a few drops to warm bath water for a soothing, stress-relieving bath.

Add a few drops to your body moisturiser and apply as you usually would (avoiding the face).

Mix with 1 part water, 1 part plain witch hazel and add to a spray bottle to create a relaxing room spray (avoid spraying on light fabrics).

Benefits:

Patchouli: A natural anti-depressant and sedative. Stimulates the release of serotonin, lifting the mood and easing fears and anxieties.

Cedarwood: Eases nervous tension and stress-related disorders and can be used as a sedative, promotion restful and restorative sleep.

Lavender: Relieves restlessness and exhaustion, promoting relaxation and calm.
Ylang Ylang: Lowers blood pressure and bolsters the nervous system, reducing stress on the nerves and repairs past damage.

Bergamot: Reduces pain and nervous tension, easing sleeplessness, high blood pressure and even helping symptoms of depression.

I carry a bottle of this with me while travelling to ease stress and anxiety on long flights (love travel, hate flying) and keep it close by to calm my mind throughout a busy day.

How do you destress?

Homemade Herb and Grapefruit Face Toner!

As soon as high Summer hits, I become taken over by this incredible urge to incorporate fruits into everything I do. I want to eat them, I want to drink them, and I want to incorporate them into my beauty routine.

The grapefruit is an excellent fruit to use on the skin due to its vitamin, mineral, and antioxidant content. Its vitamin C protects the skin from free radicals and stimulates the production of collagen in your skin, leaving you with soft, rejuvenated-looking skin. Its potassium helps smooth wrinkles and even offers some protection against UV rays. Its amino acids to help firm the skin. Grapefruit can also help cleanse skin, even out skin tone, and act as a toner… which brings us to these two wonderful recipes for herb-infused grapefruit toner: one for dry skin and one for oily/combination skin.

First, get yourself a fresh, organic grapefruit or two, and squeeze it into a jar. If you’re following the dry skin recipe, add a tablespoon or two of mineral water to dilute the grapefruit juice — this way it won’t be as harsh on your skin. Next, add the herbs/oils. For dry skin, add a mixture of lavender, chamomile, and sage to the jar. These can be done in herb or essential oil form. For oily/combination skin, use lavender (ideal for all skin types), mint, rosemary, and thyme. Again, these can be herbs or essential oils.

Seal your jar with an airtight lid and allow the herbs to infuse for 2-4 hours. Then, strain the liquid into another sealable jar, discarding the herbs. If you choose to use essential oils instead of herbs, you can skip this step entirely — your toner is already ready to be used! To use, pour a little of the toner onto a cotton ball and apply to clean skin. You’ll be left feeling totally refreshed and ready for the day!

Store your toner in an airtight container in the fridge. It should stay fresh for about 1-2 weeks. :)

Mermaid Spray For Beachy Waves

Salt on the skin, sun kissing the nose, piecey waves in the hair. A day spent in the spa has absolutely nothing on a day spent on the beach.

For those of us in the chillier portions of the world, days under the salty, bright skies are juuust out of reach, but that doesn’t mean we can’t achieve the beach’s beauty-enhancing effects on our own — namely: those gorgeously natural piecey, beachy waves formed when the sea meets your locks and the sun sets them to dry.

So we have got the perfect natural spray that is super easy to make - Mermaid Spray!

Ingredients:
1 cup warm water
1 tablespoon natural sea salt
2 teaspoons organic coconut oil
2 teaspoons aloe vera gel (straight from the plant if possible!)
5-10 drops essential oil of your choice (we used lavender)

To make, combine all ingredients into an empty spray bottle. Screw on the cap, shake well, and you’re ready to go! Experiment with different types of essential oils to find which scent you love most. I stuck with lavender this time, which smells beautiful in combination with the coconut oil, but I think this would be great with some lemongrass or other citrus scents, as well.

To use, just spray the mixture onto damp hair, scrunch to form piecey waves, and then let air dry. Voila! You’re a beach babe. I also like to spray this in my hair near the roots when it’s already dry, and then blast with a hair-dryer for added texture and volume.

Home Made Make Up Remover!

For a morning pick me up, or a finish to the day, cleansing the face is the fastest and quickest way I feel refreshed. I’ve probably been through 100 bottles of different face washes and makeup removers in my lifetime, and I never stick to just one. I always try to switch it up, but instead of buying my next round, I made my next round. When it comes to making an everyday beauty product, simplicity is key. I’d say 3 ingredients is pretty simple, and that’s all this recipe for homemade makeup remover wipes calls for. If your looking to switch up your routine, try making these natural wipes before going the store bought route!

What You Need

Large Jar
Cotton Pads
Witch Hazel
Baby Soap
Coconut Oil
Hot Water

Method

Fill up a medium sized jar with a cup of hot water, then add in a tablespoon of coconut oil.

Mix together, then add in a tablespoon of the unscented baby soap.

Next, add in a 1/2 teaspoon of witch hazel.
Give the mixture a few stirs.

Grab a stack of cotton rounds, about 2/3 the height of the jar.

Push the stack of rounds into the jar so they are standing upright.

The mixture will start to saturate the wipes, and voila! Homemade makeup remover wipes in a jar. To use, wet your face with water, then use one of the rounds to begin washing off your face. Keep your eyes closed if you are taking off eye makeup! Once done, wash off the excess remover with water.

Enjoy!

Homemade Floral and Herb Steams!

Spa treatments are the ultimate indulgence. They can make you feel just like a queen. This time of year amongst all the partying and junk food we need a little pick up!

I just discovered that you can create home-made facials using dried herbs, flowers, and oils… and I’m quite the happy girl. Today I’m sharing 3 separate recipes with you all: one each for normal, oily, and dry skin.

To make: Add dried flowers and/or herbs of your choice to a teapot along with 2 cups of boiling water. Allow to steep for ten minutes, then press or strain out herbs/flowers, pouring the hot infusion into a sink or large bowl. Add in any essential oils at this point. Then, hang your head over the bowl/sink, about 6-8 inches away, and drape a towel over your head, creating a steam tent. Steam your face and neck for about 5 minutes, remembering to breathe in the gorgeous scent you’ve created. Then rinse your face and neck with lukewarm water and pat dry.

You can create any mixture of herbs, flowers, and essential oils you like — just make sure to get the best quality materials you can find. Here are 3 mixtures to start you off!

Normal Skin: Use Rose Petals, Chamomile, Lavender, Lemon and Geranium Essential Oil

Oily Skin: Rosemary, Chamomile, Thyme, Lavender and Eucalyptus

Dry Skin: Rose Petals, Peppermint Leaves, Calendula Flowers, Chamomile, Fennel.

You can even bottle up a dried mixture and store for later use. It should last at least a month in an airtight container. Which herbs and flowers will you add into your mixture?
