Botanical Garden Babes!

The other day, I went down to the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham with a crew of totally creative babes for a photo-shoot! I love fashion (hence co-owning a clothing company!) but also love expressing myself through what I wear! So here is a collection of photos taken by the very talented Brogan, Make up by the wonderful Farzana and myself posing with babealicious Scarlett.

I have so many ideas for photo-shoots for the blog and for Wonderland and cannot wait to share the adventures with you!

That Awkward Moment When...

How often do you get a phone call from a friend that starts: 'guess what happened to me today?'
Here are a selection of a few of my favourites!

That awkward moment when...

... someone asks for your email address, and you still use the one you made aged 8

Source
... you have to sneak out of someone's house the morning after a one-night stand

(This was sent to me by a friend, and I did ask his permission to use it in the blog!)
... you're stuck walking behind someone who walks at a snail's pace

Source
... you wave at someone who's waving to the person behind you
Source
... your dad tells a really embarrassing story about you in front of your crush

Source
Source
... you send a really ugly snapchat to the wrong person
...you scroll back to 2007 on Facebook and realise how much of a loser you were

Source
... you have a coughing/sneezing/hiccuping fit in the middle of an exam

Source
... you're texting while walking and walk into a lamppost (I have done this SO many times)

Source
... you fall over in heels on the way to a casting

I feel so bad for this girl! #modelproblems or what?!
... you accidentally like someone's profile picture from 6 years ago

Source
... you realise you're third wheeling

Please let me know if you have anymore awkward moments! I'd love to hear them!

Going Dutch

Being Dutch has always been something that I am incredibly proud of. My Dutch heritage is something I flaunt, and even though I have an English AND a Dutch passport, when someone asks my nationality, my reply is always “Dutch, but I was born in England”.

I feel that living in England my whole life has made me miss out on a lot of Dutch traditions, but my mum does her best to teach me them, so today, on King’s Day (or “Koningsdag”), I’m wearing pretty much all Orange. The rest of Holland will be doing it too, and no matter how many people complain that my jeans are too bright, I am NOT taking them off.

King’s Day in Holland is the celebration of our King’s birthday. It tends to involve everyone getting horrifically drunk and partying on the streets… I’m planning on being in Amsterdam next year to join the party!

Source
Over the few days before Easter, I was lucky enough to make a quick trip over to Holland to visit some of my family. When you think of Holland, what do you think of? Amsterdam’s Red Light District? Or the soft drugs available on every street corner? I tend to think of tulips and cheese and bicycles, but that’s just me!

Yes, yes they are. Source
While I was in Holland, I visited the famous Keukenhof – it’s a beautiful garden filled with rows upon rows of flowers. I have NEVER seen that amount of flowers in one place, but it was truly beautiful!

I also had a very scrumptious waffle at lunch, like that fatty that I am ;)

I really would suggest that everyone has to visit Holland at some point in their lives, so here are a few hints and tips if you do!

1.       Don’t attempt to speak Dutch. We WILL laugh at you and reply in English!
2.       Don’t eat ‘drop’. It’s the Dutch version of liquorice. It can be recognized by its colour: black. The taste is a blend between earwax and black paint. The Dutch absolutely adore it and eat many, many kilos of it. There is a nationwide conspiracy to look at the faces of foreigners that were made to believe the stuff is actually edible.
3.       The Dutch do NOT like spending money (they would rather cut off an ear). They will love you forever if you give them something for free.
4.       If you ever want to have a cheese sandwich, do NOT cut the cheese with a knife. You will be forever hated, looked-down upon and ridiculed. We have an incredible invention known as a ‘kaasschaaf’, which slices the cheese in thin slices.
5.       A typical meal in Holland includes ‘een patatje met’ (chips with mayo) and ‘kroketten’. These don’t exist anywhere but Holland, and are the most delicious food in the world. They’re basically breaded food, stuck in a deep-fryer and eaten hot… there’s nothing better!

This is 'Kroket met patat'
6.       There is a fast and fool-proof way of embarrassing yourself in Holland. Enter a coffeeshop and ask for a cappuccino. Coffeeshops – remember this – DON’T sell coffee! (They do however have a large variety of stimulating products… If you know what I mean.)

Source
 7.       And, most importantly – the Dutch are the most kind and hospitable people. The Dutch may talk your head off, but they are truly kind-hearted. If you ever meet a Dutch person in or outside Holland, there is no shadow of a doubt that they will have a smile to share.

Let me know if you’ve ever been to Holland, or are planning on going! I’d love to hear. Don’t forget to email me on marieke@wonderlandclothing.com , or you can follow me on Instagram, Twitter or Tumblr!

HOW TO: Avoid Exam Stress

Source
This is probably EXACTLY how you feel if you have finals/A Levels this year.
I know that my first exam is 38 days away (HELP), and I’ve been sat at home revising for the past week, and working non-stop for the past month and a half (hence why I haven’t been blogging – SORRY!).
BUT I have here, for you, a little saviour.

1. Get a cup of tea. Tea helps EVERY situation.
Source
2. Calm down. Stressing out is never going to help! Let yourself stress for 10 minutes, then stand up and get your act together. BE STRONG!

Source
3.       Make a plan, write a list, and organise your time. Tie a ribbon in your hair (have you ever read A Series of Unfortunate Events?)

Source
4.       Take the evenings and Sundays off. Have a long soak in the bath, or watch a movie, or go out for a drink with friends. You can’t be expected to work 24/7, even if you feel you should be. It’s been scientifically proven that 18-year-olds can only concentrate for (at most) an hour at a time: after that, the information won’t go into your head properly. So take a break!

Source
5.       Sustenance is hugely important during work… So I tend to resort to this:

Source
... and after admitting that, I now feel like Ellen Page in Whip It.

6. During your break, get some retail therapy! I’ve been obsessed with www.wonderlandclothing.com ever since it started, and I know you’ll love it too! If you’ve been reading Stephie’s blogs (which I hope you have!) you’ll see that she chooses her favourite clothes from their site: this dress is mine! I can’t wait to whip this one out on summer days (post-exams, of course…)

7. Watch 6 consecutive episodes of Friends. No matter my mood or situation, watching Friends always makes me feel a lot better!

Source
8. And NEVER forget that soon this will all be over. Soon enough, we’ll be those people at uni, in jobs, on gap years, or whatever your plan is after exams, and we’ll be sat there, doing EXACTLY this:

And, when that really irritating person undoubtedly comes up to you when school starts again and says “I did more revision than you over the holiday”, you do this...

Preparing for Fashion Week

London Fashion Weeks kicks off this week, and one of our bloggers Marieke happens to not only be a model, but a pretty big deal in the modelling world! Represented by one of London's leading agencies Profile and also internationally by Women Management (oh yea!) she tells us all the inside on how a model prepares for fashion week!

Fashion week: the two words that some models dread most and other positively revel in. It’s our busiest month of the year, and each model has their own way of preparing for it. For some, crazy diets and crazy amounts of exercise is their forte – for me, my life just gets that bit more hectic, that little bit more stressful, that bit more exciting. Fashion Week is my escape from the everyday boredom of living at home, going to school and doing the same thing every single day, which is why I tend to fit into that group of excited (albeit ‘young’) models who rock up to castings in plain, non-designer clothes (dressed in all-black: it’s basically our uniform), with smiles on our faces and a brand-new, not-yet-battered portfolio in our arms.

As you can see by this snapchat (taken last week while on a Drama trip to London), my eating habits around Fashion Week doesn’t change much (if anything, it becomes worse.. Oops!). I am definitely NOT the person to use as a good example of a healthy diet! Of course, I could get up 10 minutes earlier every morning to make myself a juice as a snack during the day... But it’s so much simpler to just stick a piece of bread in the toaster, and enjoy some toast with a cup of tea!
These girls have inspired me to be fun when having Street Style photographs taken!
That said, when I am prancing around London, being in 12 places at once, trying to avoid the tube (stupid strikes), and attempting to look pretty all day long (as if! With this weather, I’ll be looking like a wet rat all day), having time to stop and have lunch can be tricky. That’s why, before a day of castings, I put together a ‘snack bag’, courtesy of my mother. These tend to include dried fruit (pineapple and mango are my favourites), raisins, lots of cashew nuts, and (most importantly!) a few chocolate buttons to keep my spirits high. And then, of course a bottle of water (this is a constant necessity in my handbag) and a pot of Vaseline (not for eating, unfortunately). This means that I have easy snacks all day long that are full of good vitamins and natural oils! I also stop at fresh food markets whenever I see them and buy some fruit to munch while I’m sat on a long long drive from Zone 7 into Zone 1.

Travelling around London means I have a lot of spare time on my hands, and what better than to play Flappy Bird and Candy Crush all day long? Just kidding! I will actually be doing something productive with my time. Rather than sitting, twiddling my thumbs and people-watching, I’ll pick up a newspaper and learn a bit about the world, or bring an intellectual book with me while I’m travelling. At the moment, I’m reading Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, and even though it’s well written, it’s just not my kind of book... It looks like I’ll be re-reading The Fault in Our Stars by John Green again this year! (Last year, I did just that and ended up crying on the Overground... Not a good look)
Please drop me an email at Marieke@wonderlandcloting.com , and let me know some things that you do whilst travelling! I need some inspiration! Check back soon for all the inside goss on #LFW!
