How To Decide Where To Tavel!

You might have every travel channel possible, google and pin a thousand different places, but the only real way to find inspiration is to get out there, see it, and experience it. Travel should start at an early age (Children under 2 fly free, so take advantage if you can!) I try to discover one new city or country a year, aim to go to as many places as I have pages in my passport.

The Tourist can be a horrible stereotype; the trick is to blend in with the locals, respect their culture and the doors will open for you to explore. Picking a destination is like deciding which chocolate to pick from the box; you can see what it looks like in the picture, but you don't know what it is like on the inside until you have taken a bite. Take a risk, and find a new favourite.

The internet can be a great source of inspiration so can books and movies - The Sound of Music will take you to Salzburg, Moulin Rouge to Paris, A Suitable Boy to India. Everyone should visit the Mona Lisa in the Louvre, stand at the top of the Empire State Building, wake up on a tropical island.

Do you have travel plans? This year Wonderland is off to Prague, Amsterdam and India in the New Year, how about you? Or where do you dream of going next?

Dancing Tips!

Dancing is a way to show off your finest assets, general dancing tips be in club music or ballroom are:

Stand facing your partner. If you don't have a partner do the dancing solo!

Make eye contact. This is key, as you can assess in a moment whether they actually know how to dance and will be able to take the pressure off you. Depending on the tempo and genre of music you have several options, whether to just wiggle, hold hands and so on. You may have to try out a lot of dance partners, but view it like finding the perfect fit of jeans or shoes.

You have to go through a lot of 'nearly's' and 'not quite rights' before you find perfect harmony and happiness. Remember dancing is 10% skill and 90% confidence.

Think Ginger Rogers, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, A sexy pole dancer...

Dutch courage is often necessary but do the maths first! Where are you? who are you with? Is there anyone you want/need to impress? Anyone you work with there? How dance friendly is your outfit? Above all what shoes are you wearing? It is crucial to calculate the shoe to alcohol ratio.

Watch music videos and learn, doing the time warp, the birdie song, etc are never and do never look cool. If you lack coordination shimmy on the sidelines! If you dance as well make sure you wear shoes you can dance in, and if you're not on the beach then don't go bare foot! If you want to, take lessons! You learnt to drive so why not learn to dance?

Do's and Don't Of A Small Business!

When you run your own small business there are oodles of people who’ll want to offer you well meaning advice. There are also books and websites a-plenty packed full of information. So needless to say it can all be very overwhelming! In my opinion though, these are some definitive dos and don’ts to follow if you’re aspiring business!

1. DO be yourself and a passion in your brand. Share who you are as a person first and the right customers will automatically connect with you.

2. DON’T be scared to try new things.

3. DON’T worry about what other people think.

4. DO make genuine friendships within your industry. You’re much more likely to go further with a posse of friends who have your back and support you.

5. DON’T be afraid to ask for help.

6. DO practice, practice and practice some more.

7. DO document your journey on your blog for your business.

8. DO make a commitment to learning. Sign up for workshops and courses to keep your skills fresh. Make sure you apply what you’ve learnt afterwards!

9. DON’T underestimate the power of amazing branding. Invest in it when you can.

10. DO be personable on social media and your blog but don’t air your dirty laundry in public.

 11. DO take regular non-working holidays and breaks. They’re good for the soul.

12. DO make friends with bloggers and journalists.

13. DO save your taxes!

14. DON’T stretch yourself too thin.

15. DO something that you’re passionate about.

16. DON’T be afraid to make changes if things aren’t working or you aren’t enjoying it any more.

17. DO set goals but…

18. … DON’T put too much pressure on yourself

19. DO give back.

20. DON’T get obsessed with your traffic or social media stats. A smaller, engaged audience is much more beneficial.

 21. DON’T say yes to every opportunity that comes along.

22. DO have attention to detail.

23. DON’T follow the crowd.

24. DO have a scheduled logging off time… and stick to it!

25. DON’T beat yourself up for the things you get wrong. Learn from them
and move on.

26. DO work on personal projects.

27. DON’T always think of the money.

28. DO outsource the things you can’t – or don’t want to – do yourself.

29. DO look after your health. Eat good food and limit your alcohol intake.

30. DON’T worry about catching up with everyone else. Remember, people only show the best of the best online.

31. DON’T be afraid to share your personal story and experiences.

32. DO use social media but don’t feel like you have to use every platform.

33. DON’T be spammy.

34. DON’T sell out.

35. DO spend time with the people you care about.

36. DON’T listen to negative people… and never feed trolls. Always rise above it.

37. DO it for the love.

38. DO have some budget set aside for marketing. Having a great business is one thing, but if no-one knows it exists then you’re not going to get very far!

39. DON’T beg people for social media follows or likes.

40. DO attract and repel people by sharing your opinions. You don’t want to be forgettable or bland.

41. DO be inspired by people outside your industry and niche.

42. DO keep things simple.

43. DON’T underestimate the power of an incredible testimonial.

44. DO make customer service a priority.

45. DO ask for honest feedback from people you trust.

 45. DO ask for honest feedback from people you trust.

46. DON’T worry too much about the future. Focus on what you’re doing now.

Botanical Garden Babes!

The other day, I went down to the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham with a crew of totally creative babes for a photo-shoot! I love fashion (hence co-owning a clothing company!) but also love expressing myself through what I wear! So here is a collection of photos taken by the very talented Brogan, Make up by the wonderful Farzana and myself posing with babealicious Scarlett.

I have so many ideas for photo-shoots for the blog and for Wonderland and cannot wait to share the adventures with you!

I was really stoked when Jessica (above) agreed to answer our 'inspirations' questions. I have been a fan of hers for a long time (if you don't follow her, make sure you do, all links at the end of the post!) If you're new to the blog, we interview people with interesting careers/jobs/hobbies who we think others will find inspiring! Jessica not only runs a successful blog and youtube channel, but is also studying fashion design, but unlike many who take this path is going down the menswear route! Here Jessica tells us more about her chosen career path!

Tell us about what you do.

I am doing a full time menswear design degree so that pretty much takes up all of my time. Around this though, I work I a supermarket and blog daily so my schedule is quite jam packed - its rare that I have time to stop. I'm also trying to branch out and become known as a designer as well as a secret project with a couple of friends - fashion never sleeps!

What does an average day at work look like for you?

Depending on which day of the week, it varies. I will either be at university all day, taking/editing blog pictures, filming/editing videos, sourcing fabrics and inspiration, making patterns and garments or working my bum off in the supermarket to afford it all.

Do you primarily work alone or with other people?

It depends on what it is that I am doing. As far as university, getting my name out there and my blog - I work alone. It wasn't necessarily a choice but that’s how it happens with things such as those. For the secret project, like I said it is with a couple of close friends. That works well though because we are really close and despite clashing with some ideas, we seem to always form a mutual opinion to go forward with.

Is this what you wanted to do as a child? Did you end up in this job by “accident” or was it a planned career choice?

As a child, I changed my mind pretty much once a week. I wanted to be a princess but realised quickly that it wasn't easy, and then I wanted to be a vet until I realised it involved blood. Without being the typical 'I've wanted to do fashion all my life', I do remember as a pre-teen having a desk in my bedroom which was covered in magazines and the wall in front was plastered with designs that I had come up with.  As far as accidents go, my falling into the fashion industry and blogging world wasn't an accident. I chose to study fashion and to progress upwards to a degree just like I chose to start a personal style blog - as I don't think there are many bloggers out there who dress like me as I don't like following fashion exactly.

How long ago did you start on this path?

Officially, three years ago when I enrolled onto my BTEC course in fashion and textiles. This was a two year course which guided me into my fashion degree that has helped me into internships and pursuing my dreams.

How long were you doing it before you made it into your career or primary form of income?

Unfortunately, it isn't yet my primary income. My blog does give me a little bit of pocket money here and there but it wouldn't pay the bills. As for my designer work - its all a work in progress and I still have a long way to go.

Did anything significant happen to get you to that point, or was it a series of small steps?

I was a bit of an undecided teen. My mum just thinks that I couldn't stick at anything but in honesty, I was testing the waters to find out what I loved doing. When I was doing my GCSE and A Levels, I realised that art and fashion were what is in my heart but I was too lazy to follow them (the coursework was so much!) and my parents told me that fashion wasn't a proper degree or career. After three different a level and  BTEC courses flopped - it was my time to try fashion and prove that it was my hearts choice.

What kind of education do you have?

I've got 10 GCSE's including Art and Graphics as my top two, a BTEC at distinction level in Fashion and Textiles and a degree in fashion design in progress.

Do you think official qualifications are important for someone entering your industry?

I'd say for the most part, yeah. If you want to work within Fashion then you need some sort of understanding about what you're getting into. For example, if I hadn't done these courses then I wouldn't have a clue about sewing techniques, trend forecasting, fashion history as in depth or how to pattern cut. With a lot of internship experience you could make it, but getting into those internships without the qualifications could be tricky. However, my blog has got me into a couple of internships before.

If you went to school, did you enjoy studying? Could you see where it might lead you at the time? What advice would you give to someone else who might be studying to get into your industry?

I did enjoy studying - but only creative subjects. I was a bit of a rascal and played up in most of my classes but this was mostly because I am really not academic and it frustrated me. The creative subjects like art were my favourite. I wish I could go back and thank my art teacher Mr Holmes for helping me to realise my potential - even though I didn't listen to him at the time, he was one of my biggest inspirations. As far as advice goes, I'd say follow your dreams. I wish more than anything that I didn't listen to my parents and just went straight into fashion from the get go. I regret not following my dreams sooner and I told my little brother the same thing. He was given a push towards studying Law even though Performing Arts is his dream - but thats his decision to make and realise for himself.

What do you think is the best thing about what you do?

I absolutely love having such a full life with blogging, designer stuff and working. I like that my days always vary and nothing is ever the same. I'm always blogging new things, designing and making different ideas, etc. I like the variety.

What’s the worst thing?

When a deadline is looming at university, I have to side track my life a little bit. Blogging takes the biggest back seat because my degree is my future and everything else follows suit. I basically have to dedicate my entire being to finishing my projects to a good enough standard so that I can get through university.

Would you call yourself a workaholic, & if so, are you alright with that? Do you think that’s normal for your industry?

Well, I'd say that I am but I am also the worst for being lazy. If I wake up and I'm in the mood for whatever I've chosen to do - then I'll go into it full force. I tend to set certain days of the week for certain things. Like I'll choose a day when I've got a spare 3-6 hours for planning outfits and photographing them and then in the evenings I'll edit it all and get to my designing. However, if I wake up in a lazy mood then I'll probably just be found emailing and watching Gossip Girl while updating my social media profiles.

What would your number one suggestion be for someone who wants to do what you do?

Be prepared for a lot of work. Getting into fashion design is hard, stressful and time consuming. Its completely worth it but it does drain the life out of you at times because its such a fast paced industry.

...How about number two?

Make sure its 100% what you want to do. If you're not in it with your whole heart then it won't be as fun and interesting to you. Fashion isn't a fall back career, it has to be something you're dedicated to spending your life doing.

What do you wish you had known when you first started out?

I'd say that I pretty much knew what to expect but I wish I had made myself a bit stronger before. I knew tutors and industry professionals would be very hard and cut throat, but at first I found it really hard to take and struggled with the harsh realisation that my designs weren't that good. From the three years experience that I've had, I'd say that I've developed more of a back bone but I still dread deadline day and being told that I'm not good enough.

Are there any major misconceptions about your job or industry?

Everyone thinks that Fashion is a fall back career if you fail everything else. They also think its always like 'Devil Wears Prada'. Or that its just drawing pretty dresses and sewing them together. It isn't. Fashion is a career choice, a dedication and hard work. It isn't something you just 'fall into' and sit back and relax in.

What is the best thing that’s happened to you as a consequence of the work you do?

I've met a fair few celebrities including Nick Grimshaw, David Ghandy, Tinie Tempah, etc. I've also had the chance of working with designers and other opportunities that I'd not of had otherwise.

What motivates you to keep doing what you’re doing?

There isn't necessarily a motivation, I just love what I do so I want to keep doing it. I don't wake up in the morning and dread going into university or sitting at my sewing machine - I stay up all night excited and jump out of bed.

Who do you look up to within your industry & why?

There are so many designers that I look up to. Christopher Shannon, Kit Neale, Henry Holland, Marc Jacobs, so many!

Rate how happy you are with what you do out of 100 (100 being the best, 0 being devastatingly awful) on an average day.

If I'm pottering along happily - 100. If its near deadline then I wouldn't even ask me that question, I'd be too close to exploding.

Is there much career progression available to you? What would you like to do next?

I'm only just starting out and I'm not even properly in the industry yet so I'd say there is definitely room to grow and progress in my career. I'd like to finish university and get into Graduate Fashion Week. After third year I am going travelling around the world for a year so we will see what happens from there - I want to explore the world before I settle.

Do you think you’ll continue doing this for the rest of your life?

Without a doubt.

How To Be Yourself And Love Yourself.

In this world it is super hard to be yourself and really mean it. It's even harder to love yourself, here are our tips on how to start right now!

Stop All Criticism.

Criticism never changes a thing, accept yourself as you are. We all change in life, and when you criticise yourself constantly and find fault, those changes will most likely be negative. Be kind to yourself and your changes will be positive – it really is that simple.

Don't scare yourself.

Don't terrorising yourself with your thoughts, we all do it. You lie there late at night in bed unable to sleep and over think. Try and find a positive image to think of when you feel like this, overthinking and dwelling is literally just going to make everything ten times worse.

Be Gentle And Kind To Yourself.

No really. If your body and mind are telling you to take a break and chill out then do just that. Be patient with yourself we all move at our own pace, push yourself as much as possible but know your limits. Be kind and try to continue to think kind thoughts about you, make it a habit of telling yourself how wonderful you really are.

Be Kind To Your Mind.

If you think about it we only create self hatred by telling ourselves that what we think (or negatives other people have said are true) so try telling yourself the positives, even if it is one a day! Start small.

Praise Yourself

Critcism just fuels negativity, so praise yourself. Like we said above tell yourself positive affirmations. Look in the mirror say 'I have great hair' or 'My skin looks great today' you might not believe it to begin with, but make it a habit!

Support Yourself

Sometimes we need help, and if you don't feel you can support yourself then you need to ask for support – this is supporting yourself! Asking for help to make you feel better is a sign of strength.

Be Loving To Your Negatives.

If everyone was perfect then what a boring world we would live in. Allow yourself to embrace any negative factors don't dwell on them! We all have negative attributes both physical and emotional, don't let them define you.

Take Care Of Your Body.

Learn about nutirtion, learn about what your body needs and craves to give you optimum energy and vitality. When we eat well, and do exercise our minds are clearer and happier. Trust me, a month of healthy eating and exercise your mind will be in a much stronger place.

Do Mirror Work

Sit in front of the mirror daily (or at least once a week) tell yourself how wonderful you are, give yourself positive affirmations and tell yourself what your favourite things about you are, but don't just tell yourself the physcial triats, express what you think is great about you in careers, life, etc.

Do It Now.

Don't wait to start loving yourself. It's not when you lose the weight, or when you start that new job, or find the guy. Do it now! Even if you find it hard, persevere I promise you will be happier for it.

Why Does Facebook Suck?

I have always been one of those rare creatures that doesn't and never really has used facebook. My personal account is only there because I use it for the Wonderland Clothing page, and to be honest I probably only know around 5 people IRL on my friends list (I get a lot of random adds and have no idea who they are!) However, over the weekend I was talking to my friends (noticing a pattern of blog posts here!) anyway we all decided that the following were the most annoying things about facebook.

Little Alfie did a #2 in the big boy potty last night.

I have to say that sharing this kind of information with people on facebook is just not necessary. I do not care that your child has taken a shit for the first time. People on twitter don't do this, so why do people on facebook? I find it even crazier that since I barely know people on my friends list, I still get to see these updates - so adding randoms and sharing this information just seems insane to me! Leave this kind of stuff for at home, only.

The people with perfect lives.

You know the ones I mean, they basically have the greatest lives in the whole wide world, everything is so great and they must tell you this throughout the day. Nothing ever goes wrong, social life, work life, everything is great! They tend to have 'cheeky' glasses of wine, feel 'blessed' and call their significant other 'hubby' etc. Enough, if life was that great you wouldn't need to tell the world.

The Gym Bunnies

I honestly don't understand why people feel the need to share this information with people, I really don't. When I go to the gym (which is sometimes, aherm well never) I am feeling sweaty, unattractive, hungry and do not feel the need to tell 800 people I am there. I don't care if you go to the gym, anymore than I care if you go to the supermarket. So stop it.

Facebook Hashtaggers

It's for twitter, not for facebook. Leave it at that.

My Life is Over

As fun as it is to watch people air out their dirty laundry on facebook, and basically beg for attention and sympathy posts etc I just cannot deal with it. I am sorry your baby daddy left you for your dads best friends gay uncle, but I also don't really care.

Facebook Relationships.

Publicising completely private moments gives me the creeps. Quit bragging and go hang out with each other... in person.

 Facebook Chat

Pretty much letting creepy men talk to you, and not taking a hint. Honestly some of the messages I get are literally insane.

On that final note, this is why I am sticking to twitter! I tweet over at @oxWonderland - if you tweet leave your handle in the comments!
